Thanks to my father I have been fishing as long as I can remember, starting on the Coventry Canal catching Gudgeon, Roach and Perch and with holidays in mid-Wales where I caught my first Brown Trout and Sea-Trout (both on a ‘Blackbird’s Fancy’ i.e. a worm!).Fly fishing came later in my education and after an absence of a few years caused by girls, drink, universities, jobs overseas, and sea fishing, I discovered it again and became hooked once more. It was only 6 years ago that I tied my first fly. Since then I have become passionate about the art of fly dressing, and probably more passionate about it than fishing with them!
I have fallen headlong into all aspects of tying, devouring older and all modern literature and spending around 20 hours a week in front of the vice honing my skills. I have been fortunate to win national competitions (such as the Righyni-Roose Trophy) and have also become a qualified instructor with the Fly Dressers’ Guild (FDG).
I particularly love tying hair-wing salmon flies & tube flies. My other passions are semi-realistic trout and grayling flies (which are flies tied to be very imitative but are designed so that you can fish with them and it doesn’t take hours to tie each one), this was born out of necessity when fishing a local syndicate river with very hungry over-grown vegetation along it’s banks.
My passion for fly tying has led me to become involved with my local branches (Surrey & Sussex) of the FDG which in turn has led me to become involved with the main guild.
In my spare time(!) I go to work (I am the Registrar of the Natural History Museum in London). The remainder of my spare time is spent fishing, preferably river fishing for Salmon, Grayling and Wild Brownies- although I am also known for being passionate about catching Carp on the fly.

Richard Vipond started fly tying 30 years ago and have been a member of four branches of the Guild in that time as I moved around the country. I tie flies to catch fish and enjoy fly fishing for pike and bass as well as the usual game fish but enjoy using bait and metalwork when required. Used to tie flies for retail but now a young family means I barely have time to tie for myself. Favourite flies CDC&Elk, VW bug, Snake fly and Eternal Optimist.

I have been fishing since a lad although exclusively coarse fishing in those days. The rods took a back seat once I started in business and I only came back into the fold a few years back thanks to meeting an old school friend who was a dedicated fly fisher. Once I learnt to chuck a bit of fluff and feathers around I felt the urge to tie my own flies. I came across the Sussex Fly Dressers Guild demonstrating at the South of England Show and have been a member of my for the last three years. Apart from Game fish I am also keen on luring some coarse fish onto the hook. To date I have nailed many Carp plus a few Roach and Dace. Pike and Bass are both on my future plans.

I have now been fly fishing and fly tying for about ten years. It all started after a winter of disappointment with my sea fishing trips out of RYE harbour we had six dates in the diary for December and January to go Cod fishing.
The weather stopped all six days driving back home and I passed Bewl Water I popped in for a look. The next thing I now I booked myself on a course with Iain Thompson and I never looked back. Fly tying and Fly fishing is now my number one choice. I am also the secretary of the Swale branch of the Fly dressers Guild and have been a member for about seven years.

Chris Knowles started fly-fishing as an antidote to stress, though, since joining the Executive Committee, he now wonders whether there are easier stress-busters! But it takes a lot to destroy the splendid isolation of the Ithon in mid-Wales, where he does most of his fishing. An avid bibliophile, he soon became fascinated with fly-fishing history. His first book Orange Otter appeared in 2005, another (on Derbyshire) is in the pipeline and he is currently researching a third. He is an occasional contributor to Fly Fishing and Fly Tying, Waterlog, Classic Angling and Flydresser and, until recently, edited The Hackle, the monthly newsletter of the Herts Branch. Outside fly-fishing, he spends a lot of time in the world’s opera houses, now on the audience side of the curtain, pretending to work. He also writes for the music press. He has three sons, none of whom shows an interest in fly-fishing or opera...yet! |

Richard Ellis started fly fishing and fly tying as a teenager, fishing on the lakes and rivers around Aberystwyth and reading the local fishing column written by Moc Morgan. After an absence due to the pressure of university, work and family life, he returned to fly fishing and tying in 2004.
He is currently treasurer of the Thames Valley Group of the FDG and member without portfolio on the national executive of the FDG. He is a keen trout and grayling angler and loves winter nymphing. He has completed his silver accreditation and is working (slowly) towards his gold badge.
