chilterns branch

The branch of the FDG which meets at the Memorial Hall, Great Missenden, known as the Chilterns, are an active and friendly group of like minded individuals, who gather together during the dark nights for a varied programme of events.  All levels of experience are catered for, from complete novice right through to advanced and competent fly tiers.  There is no structured approach to the branch levels of instruction, however all muck in together and the more accomplished assist and instruct the beginners in a friendly and informal way.

The branch is run by a dedicated group of energetic members who are organised by John Reid and Dave Bartle, Chair and Secretary respectively.  The 20th September 2007 saw the start of the 2007/08 tying programme with the Chair himself leading a workshop on Sedge Patterns.  These events are successfully supported by the membership, and the use of high tech audio-visual aids (digital camera and data projector) make it possible for all of the participants to see what’s going on and follow the instruction in real time.  The branch actively promotes fly tying outside of their branch meetings, they have visited other branches giving demonstrations, and they are regular assistants for the national body and big shows and exhibitions, especially the CLA Game Fair and the NEC Go Fishing Shows.

On top of the hands on tying they have a continuous programme of guest speakers’ through-out the season, including many “big-names” in our sphere of interest and influence.

The members material needs are met by John Goldie who as equipment Officer sources and supplies everything under the sun and at amazingly reasonable prices.

Once you have your materials John will show you how to use them

The branch doesn’t only tie flies though, they regularly fish together and organise several fishing outings throughout the year.  During 2007 we have visited Draycote, Busheyleaze and travel to Eyebrook at the end of September.  The branch also regularly enters the John Watts Competition and this year finished a very respectful seventh.  Thanks go to Martin Grant for his efficient organisation of these days out.The warden
