There are four competition classes, Junior, Novice, Open and Prize Winners respectively, and in each class there are separate Trout and Salmon Fly Competitions. The patterns are set out below. A Junior is under the age of sixteen years on 1st January 2007. A Novice fly-tyer is one having less than two years experience and has not previously been a winner or runner-up in the competition. The Prize Winners class is for previous winners and runners-up in the Open Trout and Salmon competitions respectively. Novices may enter the Open competitions but previous winners of the Open competition are restricted to the Prizewinners, Saltwater/Pike and Dry Fly competitions only.
The competition for Saltwater/Pike Flies is open to all.

Entries

In all classes above two of each pattern of fly as described are to be tied, and members may enter for both trout and salmon fly competitions. Novices may enter also for the Open competition if they wish to do so. Entries must be clearly marked with the member’s name, address, membership number and class and be forwarded to The Secretary, 73 Coopers Green, Bicester, OXON, OX26 4XJ by 1st April 2007.
They should be suitably mounted to avoid damage in transit. Entries will become the property of the Guild, for sale for the Guild benefit at Game fairs etc., but will be returned if asked for and the return postage cost is sent with the entry.

Competition Patterns

The fly patterns named and described are intended to be representative of the types only, for the purpose of this competition alone, and in no way to be the definitive original patterns or otherwise the named variants of them. Where a specified material is difficult to obtain an appropriate substitute or alternative will be accepted by the judges.

The skill and judgement of entrants in interpreting the patterns as stated is part of the competition.

 

Novice/Junior Trout fly – Invicta (Autumn 2005)

Hook: Size 10 wet
Thread: Tan
Tail: Golden pheasant topping
Rib: fine oval gold tinsel (5 turns)
Body: Yellow seals fur
Hackle: Natural Red cock – palmered
Beard Hackle: Blue Jay
Wing: Hen Pheasant tail
Head: clear varnish

Novice/Junior Salmon fly – Brown Turkey (Spring 2006)

Hook: Low water double Size 10
Thread: Black
Tail: golden pheasant topping
Rib: fine gold oval tinsel
Body: First half amber seals fur
Second half red seals fur
Throat hackle: Black cock hackle fibres
Under Wing: Bunched golden pheasant tippet
Over Wing: Brown turkey, or shoveler or bronze mallard with strand of Krystal flash or similar on both sides (originally turkey for the wing but shoveler or similar substitute will do)
Head: black varnish

Open trout fly – Humpy (Winter 2005)

Hook size 10 down eye dry
Thread: lime green
Tail: stacked Moose hock or body hair
Overbody and wing: Elk body hair
Under body: built up thread
Hackle: Natural red cock and grizzle hackle – (genetic saddle for preference or may require more than one if using normal neck hackle)
Head: clear varnish

Open Salmon fly - Editor (Leventon - Summer 2005)

Hook: Size 10 Double
Thread: white and black*
Rib: Fluorescent green monofilament (ca 0.3mm diameter)
Body: Flat pearl tinsel wound over underbody of tying silk (or Typexed hook shank)
*Change to black thread once rib tied in or colour thread with permanent black marker
Hackle:kingfisher blue cock hackle
Under wing: White squirrel, bucktail or bear
Wing: Black Squirrel, bucktail or bear
Cheeks: Jungle cock
Head: Black Varnish

Prize Winners Trout fly - Chief Nedeebah (Winter - 2005)

Hook: Sz 8 longshank
Thread: Black
Ribs: Flat and fine oval silver tinsel
Body: Red Floss
Wing: Two pairs of each matched Red and Yellow Cock hackles matuka-style
Hackle: One red and one yellow cock hackle wound together
Cheeks: Jungle cock
Head: Black varnish

Prize Winners Salmon – Editor (Kelson - Winter 2005)

Hook: Single salmon blind eye with gut
Thread: White changing to black as necessary
Tag: silver twist (tinsel) and light yellow floss
Tail: Toucan, gallina and powdered blue macaw
Butt: black herl
Rib: silver oval tinsel
Body: to first turn of tinsel dark yellow floss silk and then equal divisions of crimson magenta, blue, dark claret and black seals fur Hackle: Dark Yellow and light blue (half of each wound together)
Throat: Jay fibres
Wings: Married fibres of Blue macaw, teal, bustard, golden pheasant tail and peacock; Swan dyed olive yellow and crimson, two strips(over) brown mottled turkey with white tips
Sides: Summer duck
Cheeks: blue chatterer
Horn: Blue macaw
Topping: Golden pheasant over

Note the illustrated dressing deviates from the tying listed above notably in order of body parts and wing construction; substitute materials can be used where necessary whilst replicating the original pattern as closely as possible.

Saltwater/Pike fly – Prince of Tides (Flip Pallot)

Hook: Sz 2 Saltwater (tied inverted - hook point up)
Thread: Brown 3/0
Body: Copper flashabou and green bucktail wound over shank and covered with clear monofilament
Wing: White under green under Brown bucktail with copper krystal flash and flashabou
Eyes: painted yellow with black painted pupil covered with epoxy (whole head)

Dry Fly – Fan wing mayfly (summer 2005)

Hook: Longshank 10
Thread: Tan
Tails: three moose fibres (paint brush fibres are good subs)
Rib: Dark grey kevlar thread (two pairs of double turns to start then three single turns to mimic banding on the body)
Body: Bleached (cream) cock pheasant centre tail
Wings: Speckled mallard breast feathers
Hackle: Grizzle cock wound either side of wing.
