Comments on entries 2008/2009

PW Trout – Clipping deer hair consistently together with slip wings remain challenging (fortunately for judging purposes!) – the winning flies were very good

PW Salmon – Hard to split the top entrants apart and consistency was exceptional, a few minutae decided it in the end

Open Trout – Even with an SBS and apparently simple pattern this one caused problems – tails were often too heavy, bodies and hackle on the thin side but there were still a lot of good entries

Open Salmon - All fishable but this was an out and out low water dressing so a slender slim fly was required - many didn't stack the hair wing; jungle cock ideally needs to be matched both within and across the pair – the winners were very good.

Novice Trout – Tails often too heavy and ribs uneven but good fishable flies

Novice Salmon – Good consistency in the winning pair very fishable looking flies

Junior Trout – Consistency was the deciding factor and the winning flies were pretty good

Dry Fly – A standard type of pattern but fly to fly consistency makes it tricky – lots of very good flies in the mix but fly to fly variation settle the outcome

Saltwater – Epoxy work and proportions were the deciding factors and these were the best of the entries.

Overall the entries were increased in number and quality and new reading glasses proved very helpful(!) – from the tying perspective the step by steps and articles should be the blueprint for the patterns and fly to fly consistency is usually the area where winners stand out. Next years patterns will be outwardly easier to tie but still have hopefully enough nuances to make them a challenge and separate out the entries.

Regards, Richard

There are four competition classes, Junior, Novice, Open and Prize Winners respectively, and in each class there are separate Trout and Salmon Fly Competitions. The patterns are set out below. Entrants can submit flies for the appropriate Trout and Salmon class and both the Dry Fly and Saltwater/Pike Classes (which are open to all). A Junior is under the age of sixteen years on 1st January 2009. A Novice fly-tier is one having less than two years experience and has not previously been a winner or runner-up in the Novice competition. The Open class is for those who are no longer juniors or novices and haven’t been placed in the Open competition before. The Prize Winners class is for previous winners and runners-up in the Open Trout and Salmon competitions respectively.

Trophies and Awards
The winners of the competitions will receive the following trophies to hold for a year.

Junior Trout Fly Secretary’s Trophy

Entries

A pair of flies is required for all classes with the exception of Prize winners classes where three examples of the same pattern are required. Substitute materials are permitted and will only determine outcome in event of a draw. All flies are featured in step-by-step sequences from recent issues of Flydresser and are viewable on the website. Where the same pattern is listed for different classes separate prizes will be awarded.

Entries must be clearly marked with the member’s name, address, membership number and class and be forwarded to A Middleton, Wor Yem, Blackgate Lane, Henfield, BN5 9H by 1st April 2010.

They should be suitably mounted to avoid damage in transit. Entries will only be returned if asked for and the return postage cost is sent with the entry.
